Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal took the organizational part in the Russian Geographic Society expedition “Around Baikal” which started on June 27 in the village Gremyachinsk of the Baikal region of Buryatia and will end in early December 2012.
The expedition of three men decided to walk the route of the expedition of Academician Peter Pallas in 1772 and famous researcher, member of the RGS Ivan Cherskiy, who walked around the lake from 1882 to 1887. Since this time Russian Geographical Society didn’t hold the expeditions like this.
- Our goal is to pass on the trail of these expeditions and see what has changed since this time: what rivers are in place, and what are not, how people live, what happened to nature. Comparisons will be made on the basis of the detailed diaries of the past expeditions, the exact locations are depicted on the map, each place can be described to within a meter, - said Sergey Sablin, head of the Far East Expeditionary Center “White Dragon” coastal branch of the RGO.
The main task that the researchers have set themselves is to make an inventory of watercourses, to establish how many rivers flow into Baikal. In addition, the researchers are interested in ethnicity - Baikal coast-dwellers, who they meet during their travels. As a result of the expedition, the researchers are planning to organize a photo exhibition about the lake in the APEC summit 2012 in Vladivostok.
