On August 30, deep submergence vessels MIR-1 and MIR-2 perform
their last submersions in Lake Baikal as a part of “Mirs in Baikal”
International Comprehensive Research Expedition.
Submersions take place in the shore slope area of
Krugobaikalsk railway where parts of a railway car and Civil War
cartridge cases were found by the expedition in 2009. Last season,
the coming of autumn brought storms, heavy thunderstorms, and high
waves preventing further operations in this area. “The door and the
window can be seen, and when you go up you’ll see parts of
something which might be the roof or side boards”, said Evgeny
Chernyaev, the pilot of deep submergence vessel MIR-2, in 2009.
Researchers admit that the railway car may contain Kolchak’s gold.
It might be this very area of the Baikal where the railway car that
transferred the gold of the White Army fell down.
Buddhist priest from Buryatiya and representative of the
management team of the Fund for the Protection of Lake Baikal also
participate in the submersions. This will be the end to the
practical research program of the expedition. After that, MIRs will
be transferred to Irkutsk for the following transportation to
Kaliningrad.
